Lighting Control
Lutron HomeWorks on Long Island: A Homeowner's Guide to Whole-Home Control.
By the Aurora team··4 min read
Lutron HomeWorks is the system behind many of the most comfortable homes on Long Island: lighting, shades and climate that work together, look quiet on the wall, and stay reliable for decades. Here is what it does, how it is planned, and what to ask before you build.

What Lutron HomeWorks is
HomeWorks is Lutron's flagship residential control system. It ties every light, motorized shade and, if you like, every thermostat in the house to a single processor, so the home can respond to a scene rather than a wall full of switches. One button can set the kitchen for dinner, lower the west-facing shades, and dim the hallway path to the bedrooms.
The current generation runs on the HomeWorks QSX processor. According to Lutron's own specifications, QSX is the platform that supports its latest products: intelligent Ketra lighting, wire-free Palladiom and Triathlon retrofit shades, the newest keypads, PRO LED+ dimming, modern integration and remote servicing.
What a HomeWorks system can control
- Lighting. Dimming for nearly every load type, with smooth fades and no flicker when the system is designed around the right fixtures.
- Shades and draperies. Lutron Palladiom, Sivoia QS and Triathlon shades, all moving in near-perfect alignment.
- Climate. HomeWorks Palladiom thermostats sit alongside matching keypads and can bring heating and cooling into the same scenes.
- Tunable light. Ketra light sources shift color temperature through the day, cooler and brighter at noon and warm and low at night.
- Outdoor lighting. Coastal Source VIA fixtures join a HomeWorks system over Lutron's Clear Connect Type X wireless network, so the garden can follow the same scenes as the house.
Through integration, HomeWorks also works alongside whole-home platforms such as Savant and Control4, so audio, video and security share one interface.
Keypads that match the architecture
The wall is where most people actually touch a control system, so keypad choice matters. HomeWorks offers several families, including Palladiom, Sunnata and the classic seeTouch and Signature Series designs, with custom engraving so each button says exactly what it does. Backlit engraving keeps labels readable at night, and finishes range from understated plastics to glass and solid metal.
A good design reduces the number of keypads rather than adding them. In most rooms, one keypad by the entry with four to six well-named scenes replaces a gang of four or five ordinary switches.
Wired, wireless, or both
HomeWorks can be fully wired, fully wireless, or a hybrid. On Long Island, that flexibility matters because so many projects are renovations of homes built decades ago.
- New construction and gut renovations usually favor wired keypads and centralized dimming panels. Everything lives in one well-ventilated enclosure, and the walls stay clean.
- Occupied homes often use wireless devices, so lighting control can be added without opening plaster.
- Additions and partial renovations can mix both on the same system.
Upgrading an older Lutron or LiteTouch system
Many homes in Nassau and Suffolk counties still run original HomeWorks, HomeWorks Illumination or Savant/LiteTouch lighting. Lutron publishes upgrade paths for these systems, including a UL-listed retrofit approach for centralized LiteTouch panels and documented steps for moving HomeWorks Illumination systems to QSX. In many cases, existing wiring can be reused, which keeps the project far less disruptive than people expect.
How we plan a HomeWorks project
- Consultation. We walk the home or the plans with you and talk about how each room is used, not just where the switches go.
- Design. We lay out loads, keypads, shades and engraving, and coordinate with your architect, lighting designer and electrician.
- Pre-wire and rough-in. During construction, we confirm every wire run before the walls close.
- Installation and programming. Scenes are tuned in person, in the room, at the time of day they will be used.
- Support. HomeWorks QSX allows remote servicing, so many adjustments can be made without a visit.
HomeWorks across Long Island
From our base in Westbury, we design HomeWorks systems for new builds and renovations throughout Nassau County, including Garden City, Manhasset, Port Washington, Oyster Bay and Glen Head, and across Suffolk County from Huntington and Lloyd Harbor to the Hamptons. Older North Shore estates are often good candidates for a hybrid wired and wireless system, which modernizes control without disturbing original plaster and millwork.
Why the installer matters
HomeWorks is sold and installed only through Lutron dealers, and the result depends heavily on design and programming. Aurora Automated Technologies is a certified Lutron HomeWorks dealer based in Westbury, NY, serving Long Island, New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut. Frequently asked questions
Is Lutron HomeWorks only for new construction?
No. HomeWorks supports wired, wireless and hybrid installations, so it can be added to an occupied home with little or no wall work, or designed into a new build from the start.
Can HomeWorks work with Savant or Control4?
Yes. HomeWorks integrates with whole-home control platforms such as Savant and Control4, so lighting and shades appear alongside audio, video and security in one app.
Can an old HomeWorks or LiteTouch system be upgraded?
In many cases, yes. Lutron publishes upgrade paths from original HomeWorks, HomeWorks Illumination and Savant/LiteTouch systems to HomeWorks QSX, often reusing existing wiring.
Where does Aurora install HomeWorks?
Aurora is based in Westbury, NY, and installs throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut.
