Savant Smart Home Systems on Long Island: Installation, Upgrades and Service.

By the Aurora team··4 min read

Savant is known for one of the most elegant smart home apps available. Whether you are planning a new Savant system or your existing one needs attention, here is what to know.

What Savant does

Savant is a whole-home control platform. It brings lighting, shades, climate, audio, video, security cameras and door locks into one app and one remote, so the home can be run from a phone, a touch panel or a handheld remote with equal ease.

Savant's strength is the experience. Its app is built around rooms and scenes, and homeowners can create and adjust their own scenes, so the system grows with the way the family lives.

What a Savant system can include

  • Lighting and shades. Savant can control its own lighting products, and it integrates with Lutron systems for homeowners who want Lutron keypads and shades.
  • Whole-home audio. Music in every room, from background listening to a dedicated listening room.
  • Video distribution. Every source available on every television, with one remote.
  • Climate. Thermostats and HVAC zones in the same interface.
  • Security. Cameras, locks and entry systems, visible from anywhere.
  • Energy. Savant Power products can monitor and manage how the home uses electricity.

Upgrading an existing Savant system

Many Long Island homes have Savant systems installed years ago. Over time, the processor (the Savant Host) can fall behind the current software, which limits new features, app support and integrations with newer devices.

A typical upgrade replaces the host with a current model and moves the configuration to the latest Savant software. Some features, including off-site access, require a Savant subscription plan, which we explain clearly before any work begins. Audio and amplifier hardware can be updated at the same time if needed, and the existing wiring is usually reused.

Lighting upgrades in older Savant homes

Some homes with older Savant systems also have LiteTouch lighting, a brand Savant acquired. Lutron publishes a UL-listed retrofit approach for converting centralized LiteTouch panels to Lutron HomeWorks QSX without rebuilding the home's lighting infrastructure. Read more in our Lutron HomeWorks guide.

Taking over a system from another installer

If your original installer is no longer available, your system is not orphaned. We regularly take over existing systems, document what is installed, and bring the programming up to date. Clear documentation and a well-labeled equipment rack make every future service visit faster.

Savant or Control4?

Both are excellent platforms. Savant tends to appeal to homeowners who value a polished app and the ability to personalize scenes themselves. Control4 offers a very wide range of compatible devices and flexible ways to start small. Lutron HomeWorks works with both. We help you choose based on your home and how you use it. Questions to ask a Savant installer

  • Who will program the system? Ask whether the people who design the system also program and support it, or whether that work is handed off.
  • How is the network designed? Savant relies on a solid network, so ask which equipment is used and where access points will go.
  • What does the subscription cover? Understand which features need a Savant plan and what it costs each year before you commit.
  • What happens after installation? Ask how service calls work, how quickly someone can respond, and whether adjustments can be made remotely.
  • Will I get documentation? A clear record of equipment, settings and wiring protects you if you ever change installers.

Savant service across Long Island

Savant has been installed in many larger Long Island homes over the years, so a good number of systems in Nassau and Suffolk counties are now due for a host upgrade or fresh programming. We support Savant homes from the North Shore's Gold Coast villages to the South Shore and the East End.

Why the installer matters

Savant is sold through authorized integrators, and much of the experience depends on design and programming. A good installer plans the network properly, keeps the interface simple, tunes scenes in the room, and stays available after installation.

Aurora Automated Technologies designs, installs, upgrades and services Savant systems across Nassau and Suffolk counties, New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut.
