Control4 on Long Island: Smart Home Installation, Upgrades and Support.

By the Aurora team··4 min read

Control4 is one of the most widely installed smart home platforms in the country, and many Long Island homes already have one. Here is how Control4 works, when it is time to upgrade, and how to get the most from it.

What Control4 does

Control4 is a whole-home automation platform. A central controller connects lighting, shades, climate, audio, video, cameras, door locks and more, and brings them together on touch panels, handheld remotes and the Control4 app. Its biggest strength is breadth: Control4 works with a very large range of third-party devices, so it can usually bring together equipment from many different brands.

The pieces of a Control4 system

  • Controller. The CORE series controllers run the system and handle the connections to every device.
  • Remotes and touch panels. The Halo remotes and in-wall or tabletop touch panels give each room a simple, consistent interface.
  • Lighting and keypads. Control4 has its own lighting products, and it can also integrate with Lutron systems.
  • Audio and video. Whole-home music, video distribution and home theater control.
  • Security and access. Cameras, locks, garage doors and intercoms.

Signs your Control4 system needs an upgrade

  • The app is slow, crashes, or no longer supports features you see in newer systems.
  • The controller is several generations old, or has failed.
  • Remotes or touch panels are no longer supported.
  • New devices, such as a new television or streaming box, will not integrate cleanly.
  • The original installer is no longer available to make changes.

What an upgrade involves

Most upgrades replace the controller with a current CORE model and move the home to the latest Control4 operating system. Older handheld remotes are often replaced with Halo remotes, and outdated touch panels with current ones. Where hardware has failed, we diagnose the cause rather than simply swapping parts, since a failed HDMI extender or amplifier can look like a control problem. Existing wiring is usually reused.

We also handle migrations. If your home has an older platform that is no longer supported, moving to Control4 can bring lighting, audio, shades and climate onto one current system.

The network behind it

Control4 depends on a reliable network. Many problems blamed on the control system turn out to be weak Wi-Fi or an overloaded router. When we upgrade a Control4 system, we look at the network at the same time, and often recommend professional-grade switches and access points so the system stays fast and stable.

Control4 or Savant?

Control4 offers flexibility and a very wide device ecosystem, and it can start with a single room and grow. Savant is known for a polished app and personalized scenes. Both work with Lutron HomeWorks for lighting and shades. We help you decide based on your home, your existing equipment and how you live.

What a Control4 project with Aurora looks like

  • Assessment. We visit, review what is installed, test the network and listen to what frustrates you about the current system.
  • Proposal. You receive a clear scope by room, with options where they make sense, so you can upgrade in stages if you prefer.
  • Installation. Controllers, remotes and panels are installed and the network is tuned, usually with minimal disruption to the home.
  • Programming. We rebuild or refine the programming so every room works the same way and the most-used actions are one touch away.
  • Walkthrough. We show everyone in the household how the system works and leave written documentation behind.

Control4 support across Long Island

Control4 is common in Long Island homes, from Kings Point and Great Neck to Oyster Bay, Huntington and Islip. Whether your system was installed by a builder years ago or by an installer who has since moved on, we can assess it, document it and bring it up to date.

Remote support

With the homeowner's permission, many Control4 systems can be monitored and adjusted remotely, which means many issues are solved without a service visit. We explain any subscription requirements up front.

Aurora Automated Technologies installs, upgrades and supports Control4 systems across Nassau and Suffolk counties, New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut. For a broader overview, read our guide to home automation on Long Island.

Frequently asked questions

Can an old Control4 system be upgraded?

Yes. Most upgrades replace the controller with a current CORE model and move the home to the latest Control4 operating system, usually reusing existing wiring.

Can you replace an older system with Control4?

Yes. We migrate homes from unsupported or outdated platforms to Control4, bringing lighting, audio, shades and climate onto one current system.

Why is my Control4 system slow?

Often the cause is the network rather than the controller. We check Wi-Fi, switching and the controller together when diagnosing a slow system.

Can Control4 work with Lutron lighting?

Yes. Control4 integrates with Lutron systems, including HomeWorks, so Lutron lighting and shades appear in the Control4 app.
